Canada's Policy of Returning Cultural Property Sends Objects Back to Bulgaria

In March at the 40th commemoration of the 1970 Convention at UNESCO, Canada's spokesperson made it clear that Canada does not put the burden of proof onto source countries. If cultural property arrives in Canada, it's assumed to be illegal and shipped back. Other delegates at the meeting said that they were unable to prove that objects had been dug up because freshly excavated and illegal sites by their nature are not known. Keynote Panel: The 40-year Anniversary of the 1970 UNESCO Convention

Catherine Schofield Sezgin, editor of ARCA's art crime blog, and Chris Marinello, General Counsel of the Art Loss Register, will be on a panel to discuss the 40th anniversary of the 1970 UNESCO Convention at the third annual International Art Crime Conference to be held by the Association for Research into Crimes against Art (ARCA) on July 9th and 10th in Amelia, Umbria, Italy.
